Foster Recruiter and Trainer
General summary
Auckland Puppy Rescue (APR) is a registered charity relying on donations and grants, committed to rescuing puppies in need, desexing to control the number of unwanted puppies being born and rehoming all puppies that come into our care.
APR is run by a small group of trustees and volunteers who each contribute valuable skills to ensure the charity’s success. We work collaboratively and communicate regularly and are always there to support our fellow volunteers when they need it.
The role of Foster Recruiter and Trainer is to proactively recruit and onboard new Fosters to APR. They are also responsible for providing proactive training and guidance to APR Fosters specifically around basic training, socialisation and welfare for the puppies.
Key activities of the role
The key activities of this role are recruitment and training & education, and ideally we’d find someone with skills in both of these key areas however, we are open to splitting the role.
Recruitment
- You will need to proactively recruit new Fosters to APR ensuring a continuously strong database of potential Foster homes for rescue puppies
- This role is responsible for welcoming and onboarding new Fosters into APR and onto our systems
- You will also be responsible for maintaining a Foster database keeping it up to date and identifying when more recruitment may be needed
Training and Education
- This role will be responsible for proactively providing Fosters with education around general care and basic puppy training
- You will provide guidance and support to Fosters around the best ways to socialise APR puppies in their care, including when and how to manage the puppies interactions with members of the public and other dogs
- This role will also be responsible for coordinating activities and networking events to promote positive socialisation skills with the puppies in APR care
Skills you will need
- Excellent interpersonal skills; quickly builds rapport with people from all walks of life, possessing the ability to assess character, and the confidence to challenge and ask questions to assess the suitability of potential Fosters
- Previous experience with dog training would be an advantage, but not essential as training will be provided
- Excellent verbal communication skills
- Proactive and encouraging attitude
- Ability to work independently and also within a team environment (though predominantly online)
- Ability to attend the occasional fundraising event would be ideal
Support
Full training will be provided as well as support and guidance while the successful person becomes familiar with the role, and ongoing.
Time required
The time commitment for this role will vary and can be self-driven, though you will need to be responsive to queries from new Fosters.
Reimbursement
This is an unpaid, volunteer role which will require the use of personal equipment such as computer and phone.
